Day Trips From Milano: Easy Escapes to Lugano, Como, and Verona.

08 May 2025

While Milan is a vibrant, exciting city, part of its magic lies in how easy it is to explore beyond it. Thanks to Italy’s excellent and affordable train network, you’re just a short ride away from beautiful lakes, historic cities, and charming small towns. If you’re planning a day trip, Lugano, Como, and Verona are three fantastic options — though they’re only the beginning of what’s possible.

Lugano: A Taste of Switzerland with Italian Flair

Just over an hour from Milan, crossing into Switzerland feels almost seamless — but once you arrive in Lugano, you’ll notice a distinct blend of Swiss order and Italian passion. The town sits on the shores of Lake Lugano, surrounded by forested hills and mountains. Spend your day strolling along the lakeside promenade, exploring the cobbled streets of the old town, and relaxing in parks like Parco Ciani. For something active, take a funicular up to Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views. Don't forget: although you’re still close to Italy, prices are Swiss — so plan accordingly!

Como: Gateway to the Magic of Lake Como

Less than 40 minutes from Milan, Como is famous for good reason. Its historic center, with medieval walls, a stunning cathedral (Duomo di Como), and bustling piazzas, offers plenty to explore. But the real jewel is the lake itself. A walk along the waterfront or a quick ferry ride will reveal breathtaking views at every turn.

Beyond the town of Como, the entire lake is dotted with picturesque villages you shouldn’t miss if you have time. Consider hopping on a ferry to:

Varenna: A serene, colorful village perfect for a peaceful stroll.

Bellagio: Known as the "Pearl of the Lake," full of charming alleys and beautiful gardens.

Menaggio: A relaxed town ideal for lakeside promenades and mountain views.

Each town has its own atmosphere, and traveling by ferry lets you enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.

Verona: Romance, History, and Culture

In about 2 hours, you can find yourself in Verona, one of Italy’s most enchanting cities. Best known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona offers so much more. Start at the Piazza delle Erbe, once a Roman forum and still the bustling heart of the city. Climb the Torre dei Lamberti for sweeping views, or visit the Arena di Verona, a stunning Roman amphitheater that still hosts concerts and operas today. Verona’s historic center, with its winding lanes and pastel-colored buildings, is wonderfully walkable and full of cozy cafes and traditional trattorias.

Travel Tips for the Best Day Trip

  • Take the Train: Fast, frequent, and budget-friendly, trains are by far the best way to travel from Milan. You’ll avoid parking hassles and the stress of traffic.

  • Avoid Weekends, if Possible: These destinations are popular with both tourists and locals. Going midweek means fewer crowds and a more relaxed experience.

  • Check the Weather: Sunny days will make all the difference, especially around the lakes. Be sure to check the forecast before you go.

  • Pack Smart: Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a light jacket, and anything else you might need. Tourist shops can be expensive, and it’s nice to have everything you need with you.

While Lugano, Como, and Verona are excellent places to start, they are just the tip of the iceberg. Milan's location offers endless day trip opportunities — from charming Bergamo to the vineyards of Franciacorta, or even adventurous hikes in the Alps.

Wherever you choose to go, get ready for a day of discovery, beauty, and a little bit of Italian magic.
