International Mobile Plans

If you’re traveling abroad, you’ll need to look into mobile plans that travel with you.

Below is the most up to date information we have on US mobile companies’ international options, as well as information on e-sim options. Contact your mobile provider with any questions!

ATT

Plan: International Day Pass.

Price (Daily): $10 for first line, $5 for additional lines used in the same 24-hour period, in addition to your regular phone plan cost. Requires an AT&T unlimited, AT&T 4 GB, or Mobile Share plan.

At a Glance: Calls from and between the U.S. and included countries are free.

Things to Know: Once you have signed up, it activates automatically when you travel.

Project Fi

Plan: Fi Flexible

Price (Monthly): $20, plus $10 per GB of data.

At a Glance: Unlimited talk and text in the U.S. Unlimited texting while abroad. High-speed data is a flat $10 per gigabyte, even when roaming internationally, but speeds are slower after 15GB of use.

Things to Know: Texts and data in more than 200 countries for the same price you pay at home. Calls are an additional cost. Flexible plan includes bill protection, where usage is free after you hit a certain monthly threshold — 6GB for one line, 10GB for two lines, 12GB for three lines, 14GB for four lines and 16GB for five lines. Project Fi is owned by Google and prioritizes Wi-Fi calling using secure Wi-Fi hotspots, switching over to the cellular networks only as a backup.

T-Mobile

Plan: Go5G.

Price (Monthly): $95 ($5 autopay discount available).

At a Glance: 5GB of high-speed (5G) data in 215+ countries and destinations. This plan has no international roaming charges, and also comes with unlimited basic data (256 kbps), unlimited texting, and $0.25/min calling.

Things to Know: You must reside in the US, and primary usage must occur on the T-Mobile network before international use. Device must register on the T-Mobile network before international use. Service may be terminated or restricted for excessive roaming. Not for extended international use.

Verizon

Plan: TravelPass (plan add-on).

Price (Daily): $10/day in all countries where TravelPass can be used ($5/day in Mexico and Canada).

At a Glance: With TravelPass, your wireless plan travels just like you with unlimited* data, talk, and text.
*After first 2GB of data at 5G, enjoy unlimited 3G data.

Things to Know: Earn free TravelPass days through the 5G Get More and 5G Do More plans (note: these plans have been replaced and are not available for new subscribers) or by using a Verizon Visa card. For longer trips, consider opting for the International Monthly Plan at $100/month.

Ways around paying for an international plan:

WhatsApp

If you’re connected to Wi-Fi, WhatsApp chats and calls will always be free.

While you can be charged a fee per text message using your standard cellular service abroad or be held to a limited amount of texts, your WhatsApp messages operate over your data plan.

iMessage/FaceTime for iOS

No matter which country someone is in, you can send them an iMessage or FaceTime them for free - the only charges you will incur are data charges. If you have access to Wi-Fi, you can safely call or message anyone using iOS with these features.

iMessage has a feature that sends a message through SMS if iMessage is unavailable. To turn off this setting and avoid incurring charges, open your Settings app, navigate to the Messages tab and click Turn off SMS and avoid international SMS charges.

Note: If you didn’t sign up for international data and don’t want to incur additional fees, turn off data roaming on your phone. International data roaming fees can add up quickly! Doing this will ensure that your device only allows WiFi calls and messaging.
